Swope Health Services grant money will support new clinic in Independence
Swope Health Services has received more than $2.5 million in federal grants designed to increase the number of patients the group can serve through its community health centers.
Dave Barber, Swope’s interim president and CEO, said the center plans to use $2 million for a new clinic in Independence, and $500,000 to renovate the radiology and mammography rooms in Swope Health Central and to buy new imaging equipment for mammography and dental care.
A spokesman said Swope still is evaluating whether to build a new standalone clinic or expand the current one at 1638 W. Highway 24.
“These dollars will help us increase capacity and dramatically improve the caliber and cost-effectiveness of our radiologic services,” Barber said in a release. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday announced $728 million in grants provided under the Affordable Care Act, including $10.3 million for Missouri and $21.7 million for Kansas.Swope is the only Kansas City-area center receiving the grants, which are aimed at supporting construction and renovation projects, as well as helping centers buy equipment or fulfill other key facility needs.HHS said in a new report that the health care law already has helped expand or renovate 190 existing health centers nationwide and create 67 new ones, serving almost 3 million additional patients. During the next two years, the department said reform will pay for construction at 485 existing centers, build 245 new ones and provide for 1.3 million new patients.
“For many Americans, community health centers are the major source of care that ranges from prevention to treatment of chronic diseases,” HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a release. “This investment will expand our ability to provide high-quality care to millions of people while supporting good-paying jobs in communities across the country.”
